Jovonne Dempster

Lecturer

Biography:

I obtained my BA of Industrial/ Organizational Psychology from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2007 and was convinced that my strengths and passions appropriately aligned with the for profit and business sector. After spending time working in Public Health, particularly in prevention services with low-income communities of Color, I quickly learned that my desire for equality and social justice had to be the driving forces in shaping my career. This led me to obtaining my MSW from Humboldt State University in 2011 and granted me the opportunity to work in the Humboldt County community.

I am humbled and honored to be a part of HSU's Social Work Faculty. My interests include: Social Worker Secondary Trauma, Wellness, Family-Centered Practices, Harm Reduction, and methods for Client Self-Determination and Empowerment. I have a strong conviction to address and to talk about current events of racism, sexism, and classism as it pertains to our work as Social Workers and our commitment as Social Justice advocates. Through my social work experience, I have learned the importance of balance. I enjoy dancing, sewing, spending time with my dog Lulu, and LOVE my relationships with my family and friends.
