Pam Bowers

Associate Professor - Distributed Learning Program Director

Biography:

I came to social work in 1999 with a passion for combatting heterosexism and homophobia in public education through volunteer work with the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN). My volunteer experience and exposure to advocacy, social justice work, and community organizing provided the impetus for earning my BASW at San Francisco State University. I later earned my MSW at the University of Denver with a concentration in community practice and leadership. As a practitioner I worked in the field in several positions including in public health and community practice, as a school social worker, and as a tobacco cessation consultant. In those experiences I became passionate about community based participatory research (CBPR) for social justice and moved on to earn my PhD in 2013 from the University of Texas at Arlington. In addition to Humboldt State University, I have taught courses in BSW and MSW programs at the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Alaska Anchorage.
