CalSWEC Pathway/Title IV-E Stipend Projects

The Cal Poly Humboldt Social Work Department partners with the California Social Work Education Center (CalSWEC) and County/Tribal organizations, to strengthen the child welfare workforce and improve services for children and families through the CalSWEC Child Welfare Training Project. This program offers educational stipends and additional support to both Bachelor’s and Master’s students who are interested in working in the field of child welfare in exchange for a post-graduation employment obligation in public or Tribal child welfare.

BASW - Child Welfare:

  • Full Time: $15,000 stipend in the senior year. 
  • Part Time/Employment-Based Program for students that are already employees of a California County or Tribal Social Services Agency (must have support from employer).  Up to $14,164 reimbursement per year for up to two years (junior and senior years) for tuition, fees, books, and travel.

MSW - Child Welfare: 

  • Full-time Program: $18,500 annual stipend for one or two years.
  • Part-time/Employment-Based Program for students that are already employees of a California County or Tribal Social Services Agency (must have support from employer).  Up to $14,164 reimbursement per year for up to three years, for tuition, fees, books and travel.

Pathway Program:

  • Part Time Distributed Learning BASW or MSW for students that live in specific counties in rural/remote regions of California and are already employees of a California County or Tribal Social Services Agency (must have support from employer).  Up to $14,164 reimbursement per year for up to three years, for tuition, fees, books, and travel.  See the Pathway FAQS for more information.

MSW - Aging & Adult Services: 

  • Full-time Program: $ 20,000 annual stipend for advanced year only.
  • All trainees will be required to complete specialized advanced-year coursework and applied research projects focused on Adults and Aging, as well as second-year field placements at county-operated APS programs. 

Additional Information: 

  • For all programs listed above, the following are required:
       o  A 1.5-unit child welfare field seminar is required during internship years.
       o  A post-graduate employment obligation is required.
  • For the Part Time/Distributed Learning/Employment-Based Programs: a letter of support must be signed by the Director at the student’s employing agency and be included with the application.  Please consult with our Title IV-E Project Coordinator to obtain a sample letter of support.
  • Students must apply to the BASW or MSW programs before applying to the CalSWEC Title IV-E Stipend Program.
  • The CalSWEC stipends are limited. The selection process for all Title IV-Programs will be made approximately two months after admissions notification.
